Arsenal were once linked with a move for Greek international Sokratis Papastathopoulos last winter but the deal failed to materialize as the Gunners didn’t make any official approach towards getting him.
But after seeing how woeful they’ve performed at the back in the just concluded season, the Emirates Stadium outfits are now in a desperate move to capture the 29-year-old defender in the summer.
One of Arsenal’s oldest player, Per Mertesacker is retiring from active football in the summer while Koscielny is out with a six-month injury, It is therefore important for the Gunners to sign a new and quality defender and Sokratis seems to be the first Arsenal summer target, according to report via Gianluca Di Marzio.
Having played a major role in the capturing of two former Borussia Dortmund’s strikers — Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan last winter, Mislintant is expected to play a huge role in bringing the effective full-back to the Emirates Stadium.
He would be out of contract next season, Borussia Dortmund would be hoping to cash-in on his signature as they wouldn’t want to lose him on a free transfer after the 2018-19 season.
Sokratis is presently valued at £17m by the club but It remains unknown if Arsenal would love to pay that much for a relatively unknown player.
