Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has finally revealed the reason behind his uninspiring form throughout last season as he blames Conte’s tactical approach.
The player had a blistering start to his Chelsea career as he found the back of the net in seven occasions after seven matches.
His impressive goalscoring record was halted by a short-term injury which ruled him out of action for just three weeks.
After returning to action from injury, the Spaniard couldn’t continue from where he stopped as he hardly finds the back of the net in the second half of the season.
He managed to score three goals in 23 matches, making him lost out on Lopetegui’s World Cup squad in May.
According to the player Conte’s “direct” style of play didn’t bring the best out of him. He said the former Chelsea boss wanted his players to protect the ball directly in the air – which wasn’t his playing style.
“The most important thing is the way we play. Last season it was direct balls and for me to protect the ball in the air is not my best quality,” he told Sky Sports.
He was linked with a return to Juventus during the summer window but the 25-year-old rejected the offer from the Scudetto Champions, claiming he wants to justify his price tag under Sarri this season.
After scoring against the Gunners in their 3-2 victory over the Gunners, Morata said he can now play to his best quality because he’s being given the chance to attack the space and run to meet the ball.
“Now I can attack the space, I can play one touch and go in the area for the crosses. It’s better for me,” he admitted.
